Hakka Thunder Rice

It's been around for 2 or 3 years, but I've only tried this rice a couple of weeks' ago - Hakka Thunder Tea Rice(?) or 客家擂茶。

This version I tried happened to be the organic version from an organic eatery.

It's got lots of ingredients, like (clockwise from top) bean curd, green vegetable, black-eyed beans, long beans, cabbage, dried chai poh (preserved radish, for vegetarian version) and peanuts served over brown rice (for organic version).

Served with a herby, grassy-tasting, minty soup which one is supposed to pour over the rice, but I didn't do that, coz all that water will definitely stuff me up too soon.

It's very filling, so it's wise to ask for less rice and to forgo the peanuts since I don't like them. However, I think I still prefer the Korean Bibimbab over this anyday, even if it's the vegetarian version... I can eat that rice+vege dish everyday!

i have tried this thunder rice once in the office. not bad, but i am definitely staying away from the tea which has a very "raw" smell and taste. not green tea at all.

some of my colleagues luuuv the green concoction so much, they can drink it! eeeee...... >-<

there's 1 great one in Boon Lay market, rather atypical of what we get around. the boss said his is authentic from 河婆, he is brother of an ex-TV actress also. ok, tis is just the trivia.

but it's great compared to the chain store from Amoy FC. i love their herby soup, no raw taste but very very fragrant. 1 can pick out notes of peanut + sesame seeds + Chinese tea from the concoction.

hmmm.....my all time fave detox meal. =P

There is a good stall selling this at Food Republic, Vivocity. It is the non-vegetarian version with ikan bilis.

The green soup is actually basil with a bit of mint.

Go for the brown rice version.

Yummy!
